NOW OPTIONAL ON THE PRIMROSE REAR-A-STEER

by P. A. C. Brockington AM! Mach E

AIR suspension is now available as an optional feature of the third axle of the Rear-a-Steer conversion system produced by Primrose Group Sales, PO Box 1, Grove Lane, Padiham, Lancs., which provides interaction, between the second steering axle and the driving axle of the vehicle.

It is claimed that tyre adhesion, stopping power and ride characteristics are considerably improved.

Pressure in the air springs is controlled by a load-sensing valve linked to the driving axle. In operation the load on the second steering axle is automatically increased from 15/16 cwt. unladen to around 6 tons when the vehicle is fully laden, while the load on the driving axle is increased from 32/34 cwt. to 10 tons proportionately.

If required, a separate control may be fitted that enables the driver to release the air from the Rear-a-Steer suspension and thus transfer most of the load on to the driving axle to increase adhesion.

The bellows of the steering axle are Dunlop double-convolute units located longitudinally by quarter-elliptic leaf springs that act as flexible trailing arms, transverse location being provided by a Panhard rod mounted parallel to the axle beam. Telescopic dampers are standard equipment, A number of AEC Mercury chassis, equipped with air-suspended Rear-a-Steer axles, has been ordered by the Regent Oil Co.
