TWO NEW deputy Licensing Authorities Northern area and Gerald Kidner, Eastern Mr. Baldwin's appointment took effect on May IP and he replaces H. Bewick who has been appointed chairman of the Industrial Disputes Tribunal. The new deputy LA is a barrister with chambers in Newcastle. He was called to the bar in 1951 and practised in the North East circuit. It is understood that this week he sat in on the Northern Freightliner enquiry.

In the Eastern area, Mr. Kidner's appointment was to fill the vacancy created by the death of Mr. J. Gazdar in January. Mr. Kidner is also a barrister, having practised in the South Eastern circuit since 1952. Keith C. S. King, of Ellington, Hunts, 24year-old director of the family haulage company, S. B. King Ltd., The Green, Ellington, has been elected to Huntingdon Rural District Council to represent Ellington. The youngest member of the Council, he joins his father, Mr. Sidney King, who has served for some time.

B. P. Dyer, of Marholm, near Peterborough, group staff director, manufacturing, of the Perkins Engines Group since last October, has been elected a director of F. Perkins Ltd.

Sir George Harriman, chairman of British Motor Holdings, has been elected president of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. Sir Patrick Hennessy, chairman of the Ford Motor Co., president for the past two years, now becomes deputy president. J. D. Richards, chairman of the British Solex Group and M. I. Prichard, chairman and managing director of the Perkins Engines Group, were re-elected as vice-presidents. M. L. Breeden, joint managing director of Wilmot Breeden, continues as honorary treasurer. This is the eighth year in succession that he has held this office. As chairman of the British manufacturers' section of the Society, L. G. T. Farmer, chairman of the Rover Co., continues as an honorary officer.

A. E. Brewer, has been re-elected chairman of the South Wales area of the Passenger Vehicle Operators Association Ltd., with H. F. Hill and H. Evans as vice-chairmen.

Donald Boxall, general manager and director of Atkinson Vehicles (London) Ltd., has retired after 15 years' service with the company and has been succeeded by A. T. K. Barnes, the deputy general manager. Mr. Barnes was formerly London export manager and then depot manager for Guy Motors Ltd.

Maurice Harding, divisional traffic superintendent for the Bristol Omnibus Co. and the Bath Bus Co., has been appointed assistant traffic manager of United Automobile Services Ltd., Darlington, from June 1.

B. J. Hill has been elected chairman of the Institute of Traffic Administration London centre with L. J. Evans as vice-chairman.

E. W. Craig has been appointed chairman of the Transport Users Consultative Committee for Scotland in succession to Sir John Greig Dunbar who has retired. J. Horsford has been appointed home sales manager and J. R. Burgoyne export sales executive of Atkinson Vehicles Ltd.

L. E. Dale has been promoted to under secretary in charge of the MoT highways planning and policy group; G. R. W. Brigstocke has been appointed under secretary in charge of the group of divisions now dealing with general policy on freight co-ordination, including the proposed National Freight Organization, containerization, the goods side of the Transport Holding Company, the carriers' licensing system and general regulation of the road goods transport industry. W. W. Scott, assistant secretary, has succeeded Mr. Dale as head of the road safety local division. Miss E. P Kruse is the new head of the road safety general division in place of Mr. Scott. In the absence of H. Gillender on sick leave, W. H. Alexander has taken charge of the vehicle regulation division.

S. A. Fitmis has been appointed chairman of the British Transport Docks Board from June 15 in succession to Sir Arthur Kirby, who on that date becomes chairman of the National Ports Council. Mr. Finnis is managing director of the Board and was previously general manager. He takes over as president of the Institute of Transport on October 1.

Ryland Garage Ltd. has appointed Alan Mantle as its UK fleet sales promoter.

OBITUARY

We regret to record the deaths of Mr. Charles Brett, Mr. B. V. Clifton and Mr. Charles Gresswell.

Mr. Brett. of Eastfield Road, Peterborough, was founder and managing director of Wefts Transport, Ltd., Guyhirri, near Peterborough. He was 82.

Mr. Clifton was well known in the Midlands as key sales personality of North British Rubber, now Uniroyal Ltd. When he retired in June 1963, he had been with the company for 51 years—all in the Midlands area.

Mr. Gresswell, 74, of Victoria Street, Billingborough, Lincs., founded and for many years carried on a coach and bus service at Billingborough. He started his service after the 1914-18 war and in 1939 built a new coach depot at Billingborough. About three years ago he sold out to E. V. Wing and Sons, coach proprietors, Sleaford.
