A New Appliance Arranged for Coupling Up to the Company's Municipal type Mechanical Horse

QTREET cleansing, .which. is one of the most important ....)phases of municipal-transport service, should benefit by a new development in the form of a road sm.eper and collector, which has recently been introduced by Scannnell Lorries, Ltd., Watford West, IIerts. The machine incorporates a number of novel features and can be coupled Up to a Scammell municipaMype mechanical-horse motive unit.

It is equipped with road-sweeping apparatus, operated by a separate engine, enabling the brush speei:s to remain constant or to he varied to suit road conditions. irrespective of the road speeds of the vehicle. The engine and brush controls are operated from a controller's seat, which provides an excellent view of the road and the channel, so that the work can be carried, out with a high degree of efficiency. The road-sweeping speed can be varied from 4 m.p.h. to 8 m.p.h. and 24-30 miles can be swept in eight hours.

The engine is a standard Scammell 10 h.p. four-cylin&red unit, with a bore of 2i ins., and a stroke of 3k ins., the b.h.p. being 20.

Two road brushes are provided—a channel brush and a rear brush. The channel brush is fitted at an angle to the chassis frame, has a lateral control and is spring-loaded, so as to conform with various cambers. The rear brush is also spring-loaded, and is arranged to take the channel sweepings and carry them forward on to a rotary conveyor, which, in turn, transmits them into a large-capacity body. The whole operation is carried out hygienically and no trail is left.

The body, which is steel-lined and has a capacity of 110 cubic ft., is fitted with hand-operato I tipping mechanism. The approximate load capacity is three tons. The large capacity of the body and the capacious water tank, for dust elimination, enable the machine to cover a big mileage without interruption for taking on water or running unnecessarily to the depot or tip to discharge the load, so that the malcimum working time can actually be spent on the job.

In addition to the efficiency with which the operations can be performed, the appearance of the appliance has been studied and, from accompanying pictures, it will be seen that it is of workmanlike design. Moreover, the maintenance engineer will quickly appreciate the fact that the designer has studied the question of accessibility.

The overall length of the new machine is 14 ft. 6 ins., its overall width being 7 ft. 6 ins., and its overall height 6 ft. The diameter of the channel brush is 21 ins., and of the rear brush 24 ins., the width of sweep being 6 ft. 6 ins.

The new Scammell road-sweeper-collector will be on view at the Conference of the Institute of Public Cleansing, to be held at Scarborough from June 5-9.
