Mobile Trailer Outfits Equipped For Special Services Are Gaining Popularity.

A TRAILER-CONCRETE-MIXER UNIT.

AFEATURE of recent times is the growing appreciation of the value of fast road transport for the conveyance of equipment, rather than of goods and persons. A most notable example is the mobile pumping plant of the A.R.P. type. Recently, the aircompressor made its, appearance mounted on a pneumatic-tyred trailer, suitable for high speeds, instead of on a chassis limited in respect of mobility. to laborious man-handling at the site of operations, and slow towing on the road.

The latest evidence of the speed of the movement is afforded by a trailer concrete mixer built by Milian' Machinery Co., Ltd., Great Winchester Street, London, E.C.2. This has as its basis a well-sprung trailer mounted on two Dunlop pneumatic-tyred wheels running on Timken tapered-roller bearings.

Suitable for fast towing, it can also 82 he manoeuvred with considerable facility by four men with the aid of the telescopic drawbar provided. The plant includes a 3-ft. 9-in, diameter mixing drum and a Lister singlecylindered petrol engine.

A POWERFUL LOUD-SPEAKER TRAILER.

A NOTHER EXAMPLE of the tenti.dency to employ the mobile trailer for special purposes other than goods carrying is found in a neat unit that represents a combined effort of Worthmores, Ltd., and Grampian Reproducers, Ltd. It is equipped with loudspeakers and is intended for use in connection with the delivery of public addresses, crowd control. A.R.P., military operations, and .so forth. When the trailer is in motion, the two speakers rest on the platform at the rear, whilst they are raised by the simple expedient of lifting them upwards and forwards, an operation one man can easily perform. The rear

tubular supporting members are hinged at their approximate centres, so that each can collapse and fold back between the mudguard and the body when the speakers are lowered. To afford rigidity of the stays when straight, as illustrated, a short tube slides over the hinge and propinquitous portions.

To adjust the direction of a speaker a large wing nut, forming part of the supporting clip, is slackened, enabling the trumpet to be swivelled about a vertical or horizontal axis. Their range is about three-quarters of a mile.

Included in the equipment is an amplifier giving an output of 15 watts, operated from the mains or from a petrol-engine-driven dynamo and 6-volt battery. Jacks are provided to position the trailer when it is disconnected from its tractive vehicle,

We understand that one of these outfits was used for the first time in connection with controlling the crowds at the Cup Final at Wembley.
