plans for truckstop on All

PROPOSALS FOR A 24-hour truckstop on the All trunk road have been dealt a blow by local councillors who have said they will oppose the project.

Last week members of Forest Heath District Council planning committee said they were "minded" to refuse planning permission for a truckstop on a site in Suffolk which would include parking for 73 trucks, as well as a 64-seat cafe and security measures including several 8m-high floodlights.

The committee was acting against the recommendation of council planning officers that the application, submitted by local landowners, should be approved.

A final decision on the development, which is intended to replace the long-established truckstop in nearby Turnpike Road, will he tak en next month when the committee reconsiders the issue.

Before the meeting about 90 letters expressing concerns over the plans were received, with objections from nine parish councils Residents from the nearby vil lages of Kennett and Kentford have expressed uneasiness about the number of trucks that would be driving between the proposed site and the A14.

Suffolk County Council accepts that the All needs another 100 overnight truck spaces — it "strongly supports" the provision of truck parks with good quality overnight facilities at regular intervals along the All and A14.

A statement from Suffolk County Council says: "The council has established a clear need for such facilities which will help overcome lorries having to park off the main roads at inappropriate locations.

"The application, as potentially would others, will meet that need."

Chrys Rampley, Road Haulage Association manager, infrastructure, environment and business affairs, says: "We know that Suffolk County Council has recognised the requirement for better truckstop facilities, and this is certainly a place where another facility could be located."
