THE FREIGHT Transport Association (ETA) has gained the support of politicians from all parties for its Every Penny Counts campaign. which kicks off today. It is calling on the road transport industry to offer its backing.

In the face of the impending 1.84p/lit duty increase on fuel, due 1 April. the Every Penny Counts campaign will ask those who depend on road transport for their livelihoods to write to their MPs The FTA has had 150,000 postcards printed for this purpose. The postcards, which can be found inside this week's Commercial Motor, are supported by the website www.fta.co.uk/epc. which will also include an 'MP finder' chart so people can send the cards to their local MPs directly.

It will also call for a moratorium on the planned 9% rise in the fees for annual CV tests and inspections as well as proposed increases to vocational driving test fees.

Every Penny Counts is also backed by the British Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association (BVRLA) and the Federation of Small Businesses.

'Me campaign includes an Early Day Motion (EDM) in Parliament, currently backed by 18 cross-party MP's, that "notes with concern' the rising costs faced by UK logis tic companies that are "strugglinj to stay afloat': Jo Tanner, director of communi cations at the FTA,says:"The FL5 is under no illusion that the Treas ury coffers are empty and there i! only a limited number ways of re couping those losses. The 1.84p/1i increase comes before the Budge and we are concerned the Treasur: could have two bites of the cherry "This increase could make thi difference between staying afioa or going under and I do not thinl the powers that be realise that."
