IT SHOULD be legal by the middle of next month to drive a lorry up to 7.5 tonnes on British roads without an hgv licence.
The amending legislation which pushes up the weight limit from 3 tons unladen to 7.5 tonnes (7.38 tons) gross wag given its final reading in the Commons last week.
The Road Traffic (Drivers Ages and Hours of Work) Bill which contains the new regulations, is expected to pass through the Lords this week.
With Royal Assent possible in the next few days the Bil should be in operation very shortly.
Under Section 1 of the legislation, the Secretary of State may make regulations to control the ages of drivers and the kinds of vehicles which may be driven.
These regulations are expected to follow the making of the Act and will bring the EEC driving licence regulations into force as well as altering the necessity to have a heavy goods vehicle driving licence for vehicles over 7.5 tonnes.
The Act will also amend the Transport Act 1968 on drivers' hours paving the way for the adoption of EEC driving hours regulations in this country.
