tor's own annual operation. mileage.

For instance, the operator might choose tto buy an F86 artic unit requiring service every 6,000 miles. If the annual mileage totals 60,000 miles then 10 service appointments would be necessary.

Assuming service costs of £553.62, inspection costs of £180 and repair costs of £750.30 in the first year, this gives an annual cost of £1483.92. For an annual mileage of 60,000 this works out to 2.47p a mile.

Supposing in the second year that costs have risen and a new agreement is negotiated on that basis so that the service cost is £675.31, the inspection cost £200 and the repair cost £1,560, a total of £2,435.31, the cost per mile would still remain at 4.06p.

I spoke to the group fleet engineer of one of the companies using the scheme. Mr Geoff Whittle of W. H. Bowker Ltd, Blackburn, told me that he was eminently satisfied with the way his maintenance costs were working out.
