IFE-BLOOD of trade," was the

L.Adecription of

to road trans port by Sir Joseph Lamb, M.P., in a • toast to A.R.O. at the North Staffs Sub-area dinner last Saturday.

In past days, he said, it might have been necessary for_ a trader to allow a fortnight to replenish his stocks, but road transport meant that he could order one day and receive the goods the uext. Rapid transport was, consequently, more essential than in the past, for, in the case of a national emergency, there were no reserves upon which to draw: There would not be time, Sir Joseph Lamb Continued,' for Col. SandenranAllen's Bill, now before the House, to go further this session, but it would not be without immediate effects among the Members.

More nonsense had been talked about co-ordination than about anything else, except sea-serpents, said Major H. E. Cra.wfurd, A.R.O. national president, and he congratulated Sir Joseph on dealing comprehensively with the industry without dragging in

that word. He hoped that before the year was out the Association would be able-to offer to Mr. Hore-Belisha some important contribution to his campaign for road safety. Giving instances where recommendations of his bench of magistrates had been disregarded, Major the Hon. Eric Long, J.P., said that if the county authorities did not put the roads in order they .had no right to blame lorry, or any other, drivers for the consequences.

Deep concern of A.R.O. at the number of accidents was expressed by Mr. J. W. Beresford, and Mr. F. L. Bunn (who, with Mr. E. J. Shopland, clerk to the West Midland Licensing Authority, responded) asked that drivers should look upon the police as friends.

Appreciation of the work done by the technical Press was voiced by Mr. G. F. Goodwin, -West Midland Area secretary, and Mr. Ashley Taylor (The Commercial Motor) and Mr. E. K.

Wenlock replied. Mr. Tom Caddy presided.
