Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

the employment of power-driven vehicles and appliances in the service of municipalities can be gathered from the fact that, despite the greatly increased size of this issue, we cannot deal other than briefly with several phases which really deserve more attention, and, in fact, certain aspects will be included in our next issue.

Perhaps the most remarkable development has been in connection with the displacement of tramway systems. For years this subject has been a bone of contention at conferences and wherever municipal-transport men forgathered. There .have been the inevitable arguments that neither bus nor trolleybus could deal adequately with the volume of traffic handled by tramcars, that either one or the other alternative means for transport available was the better to undertake the major part of the task.

The question has settled down mainly to the economic aspect. Where particular areas have their own generating stations and do not already possess large numbers of motorbuses in good condition, then the trolleybus is in a well-favoured position. Elsewhere, under different conditions, the motorbus—mainly of the oil-engined type—is more than holding its own ; but in the minds of many it matters little which media be employed so long as that anachronism, the street railway, be discarded.

In the sphere of street cleansing and refuse collection great advancements are being made, and new and improved types of vehicle and appliance are constantly being devised. The results are being shown by rechiced costs, greater convenience and the satisfactory promotion of hygienic methods: The employment Of municipal motors does not end here. Large numbers are used for road con-. struction and maintenance, by electricity departments, municipal laundries, hospitals, schools, libraries, parks, recreation grounds, etc.

Steady progress is being made in the equipping of fire brigades with the most efficient pumps, escapes, tenders, and even canteens for the men. In fact, there are few branches in which the petrol, oil or electric vehicle is not exercising a beneficial influence by improving efficiency,. accelerating service, and assisting in the promotion of all-round economy.
