Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IT is probable that in the near future the pro.vision of first-aid equipment and the training of drivers and conductors in first-aid work will

be made compulsory as regards buses and coaches concerned in long-distance travel by road, but it has been suggested to us by the St. John Ambulance Association that the owners and personnel of other vehicles—both passenger and goods—might become interested in this subject.

The big increases in the number of accidents to pedestrians and users of motor vehicles during the past few years render this matter one of considerable importance—in fact, it is not going too far to say that every adult member of the community should possess at least an elementary knowledge of first-aid and thus be ready for emergencies.

It is a subject which, once brought to the notice of the men in question, would probably prove of real interest to them. We deprecate increases in the number of regulations and restrictions already existing, but we think that much could be done to help this valuable movement without users incurring any great loss of time, being caused inconvenience in any manner, or involved in any great expense.

It may not be considered essential to provide first-aid equipment for all vehicles, but where • this is thought to be advantageous the average cost need not exceed £1 per vehicle.

In the case of important concerns, classes could be arranged on the premises, but individuals can join classes organized in many parts of the country at an average figure of 2s. 6d. for each of the six sections of the course. Those participating are expected to undergo an examination for their certificates; the fee for this averages is. 6d. per head, which cannot be regarded as expensive.

We believe this suggestion to be an excellent one and worthy of the consideration of vehicle owners.
