June cut-off for fuel surcharge move
IRISH HAULIERS have set 27 June as the deadline for haulage customers and the Government to take action on fuel costs.
The Irish Road Haulage Association (IRFIA) wants haulage customers to agree to a fuel surcharge on contracts and the Government to deliver a fuel tax rebate to licensed hauliers.
Onll June, a meeting of hauliers in Portlaoisc agreed to hold off industrial action until then, pending talks.
But the previous day, transport minister Noel Dempsey said reduced excise duties were not being contemplated: "If one starts reducing tax rates as oil prices rise, it is a further encouragement to keep putting prices up because the taxpayer will carry the can." 1RHA president Jimmy Quinn says: "There isn't a haulier in the country making money.
"Many of them are severely in the red; these people are in a desperate state.
If the talks fail and industrial action is taken, it will be freightoriented, Quinn adds, without specifying where or when any such action might take place.
