Cisternas Cobo builds around 350 petroleum, chemicals. gases and asphalt tankers a year, and its UK arm is owned jointly by Talleres Cobo Hermanos of Spain and Hydraulic Discharge Equipment of Castleford, which also provides service and Pet-Reg support.

The example seen at FPS Dublin was one of eight 42,800-litre Cabo tankers for Suckling Transport's Tankshare spot-hire fleet at West Thurrock.

Weighing around 5.4t it will run with a matching Euro-5 Daf CF 85-410 FTP 6x2 at 44t GCW.

Clayton Commercials Burscough, Lancs

UK independent Clayton Commercials builds road tankers for the chemicals, edibles and liquefied gas industries. Its also makes a range of standard and deep-lift liquid-waste vessels; its 33,000-litre aluminium vacuum tanker on tri-Discos axles weighs 5.3t and is a good seller. Typical users are UK Waste and United Utilities.

Clayton also builds a rather sophisticated tipping version for heavy, hazardous waste — Harpers has just taken its second one. Another tanker selling well is its lightweight LPG carrier with a capacity of 52,000-57,000 litres and payload up to 25.5 tonnes.

Crossland Tankers Swatragh, NI & Burnley, Lancs

At its two factories, Crossland manufactures around 400 road tankers for the chemicals, dairy products, fuel oil and bitumen transport industries. It also builds a range of waste and vacuum tankers such as the 'black' fuel-oil aluminium versions made for CPL Petroleum.

Some are insulated to retain heat and help discharging while others are of stainless steel. These are costlier and heavier but can carry other products later on.

A third of Crossland's output is taken up by 33,000-34,000lit bitumen carriers, and many of them are currently in use in major fleets such as Shell. Esso, Petroplus and DHL.

Fetdbinder Sutton Bridge, Lincs

Feldbinder is best known for its dry-powder and petroleum tankers.

A 42,000-litre fuel tanker displayed in Greenergy livery at the recent CV Show was one of six built for Turners (Soharn): another nine have been ordered for later this year.

Its other NEC exhibit, a sparkling 32,000-litre, seven-compartment tanker with 100mm insulation. and heating coils, was built on a BPW tridem stainless-steel chassis for Aitchison Topeka.

FEB also excels in bitumen carriers and one 32,000-litre example seen at the FPS Dublin show in Irish Tar livery was the local fleet's 12th.

The 25 into all-Ireland include two for Montgomery Transport's fleet and others to Ninas.

GRW Engineer Jacksdale, Notts

Since entering the UK market in 2006, GRW Engineering's UK office has already secured orders for military refuellers and, together with Fluid Transfer and MAN, a deal for over 300 military support vehicles on a supply contract. Another client, Haartz Tanker Rental, has a number of GRW tankers in its sizeable fleet.

This year, GRW is extending its UK and Irish product range to include stainless-steel semi-trailers for heavy fuel oils and GP versions for carrying general bulk liquids. It is also going to introduce LPG tankers and intermodals.

Since its re-organisation in 2006, Hell's Polish tankbuilding partner Stokota has supplied it with over 200 trailers. Customers range from blue-chip companies to the smaller ADR fleets and aftermarket support is provided by Wednesburybased A&R Vehicle Services.

Typical clients include Emo Oil of Dublin, which has three new drum-braked Heil 42,600-litre tankers; Suckling Transport, which has several on a Total Butler contract; Tesco, which has added seven more to its 100-plus fleet: and Linton Fuel Oils, which has one in its 45-strong fleet.

Spanish tanker firms Indox and Parcisa have merged to become Parcindox, a large European manufacturer of spirits, LPG, food liquids, bitumen and vacuum tankers.

Parcisa designs include stainless-steel chemical and aluminium fuel tankers.

Its latest fuel tankers have a stronger neck section with internal air and electrical supplies.

Customers include Colas, which has taken bitumen carriers: Haartz Tankers, which has taken its first 41,000-litre, two-compartment aviation refueller; and Hardstaff group, which has taken a small batch of 54,000-litre I .N 6 tankers.

Kassbohrer KassTat Halifax, W Yorks

Kassbohrerbadged tankers use Tirsan-made barrels which are then mounted and equipped at the group's factory in Goch, Germany for use with both fixed and tipping trailers.

Versions are built to carry such products as dry powders, plastic granules, general liquid foodstuffs and even hot bitumen.

Tirsan recently bought the German tanker specialist Hendricks which has enabled the Turkish parent group to add special-purpose tankers to its portfolio.

These include chemical and petroleum vessels plus more specialised trailers for carrying high-value liquids. All are built from V2A and V4A materials and meet GOVS and ADR regulations.

LAG Wittiams Tanker Services Morley, W Yorks

Williams Tanker Services is the distributor for Belgian LAG tankers. Dutch-built Burg and Hobur vehicles, Italian-made Omeps non-tip powder vessels and RTI, Holland's low-noise power packs.

Sales this year of over 130 powder tankers have gone to the likes of Clugston Distribution and a number of fleets with Olympics contracts such as ICE and Ray Hamblin. LAG 42,600-litre six-pot ADR fuel tankers have gone to clients such as GB Oils, Beyford Oils and Larbert-based Scottish Fuels but tipping powder tanks, vacuum tankers and bitumen vessels have also sold well.

Clients include James Durran and Stillers with tipping powder tankers. Harry Lawson with bitumen vessels, and Nynas —which runs a mix of ADRs, vacuum tankers and bitumen carriers.

Lye, W Midlands

i.akeland's UK-built aluminium Innovator remains the only British-built large petroleum tank trailer on the market, and examples were displayed at both the FPS Dublin and CV shows.

Aluminium, mild or stainless-steel barrels are made at sister firm Road Tankers Northern's Barnsley factory; RTN also builds its own brand of ADR rigids and trailers.

Lakeland's Innovator is available as a 42,600-litre vessel or as one reduced in length and capacity to overcome access problems. Such short 37,600-litre ADR trailers run in Sut tons' fleet on contract to Harvest Energy. Greencrgy and DHL have chosen versions.

Lakeland also produces mild or stainless-steel tankers, as well as bespoke designs for carrying LPG and heavy oils.

Magyar UK Totton, Hants

Magyar's broad product range and steady growth in the British and Irish tanker markets were highlighted at both the CV and FPS Dublin shows.

At the latter event it exhibited a standard-spec, 42,000-litre, six-compartment petrol tanker for Reynolds Logistics, similar in design to others in the Par Petroleum, Tanker Services and Tesco fleets.

NEC examples included a 33.500-litre stainlesssteel-clad food-grade vessel with Fort Vale metering and Discos axles, weighing 6.8t.

A 30,000-litre ADR chemical carrier had RO-R drum-braked axles while a 5.7t, 30,000-litre milk reload trailer in TIP markings had Fort Vale metering and BPW discs.

Munich-based Rohr's latest ADR Class 3 'black oil' tanker will carry heavy oils and middle distillates on Walsall-based Integrated Tanker Services' contract with lover Energy.

Its capacity is 38,000-42.000 litres depending on the product.

The aluminium vessels front section has a distinctive round/elliptical design which helps lower the centre of gravity and keep its tare weight down to 5.3t. At just 8.0m from pin to rear axle, it is shorter than usual.

Rohr's strong links with Irish operator Top Oil are reflected in the 46,700-litre fuel-oil tanker with its unusual shape and countersunk neck-rings.

Spitzer builds around 900 tankers a year, over half going to Eastern European customers and the remainder into its home market.

Although its 800kg lighter composite tank has French type approval, production is still a while off yet.

Standard metal tanks range from 23m non-tips to its special 80m' tippers — but despite a lengthy order book, it sold over 40 non-tips to UK customers last year. One is Dudman Group, which has a dozen 37m' powder tankers on order; Muldoon Transport Systems also took 20 across the year for its rental fleet.

Best known for bespoke-built rigid ADR tankers, seasonal fluctuations have forced Tasca Tankers to diversify, adding aviation and vacuum tankers to its traditional aluminium and mild-steel fuel and oil carrier offerings.

With a pedigree going hack to Charles Roberts Engineering, the Wakefield firm is also reviving its interest in building semi-trailers.

It has already made quite a number of single and tandem steer-axle trailers for Hoyer. WCF and Wincanton's home delivery fleet, and now intends to enter the larger tank trailer market in its own right.

The larger artic versions are all built on to Vallely Tankers' own chassis or subframe, and there's a lengthy options list including alloy wheels, rear-steer axles and on-board weighers.

The highly polished 32,000-litre aluminium monocoque vaccuum tanker displayed at the CV Show was PTO-driven via a Jurop LC420 pump and weighed in at 5,750kg.

Staffordshire-based Holford Contracts was the owner. but other Vallely clients include JK Environmental, Billy Bowie and Ray Owen Waste.

Whale has long experience in building complex, powerful waste-water recyclers and highperformance ADR tipping vacuum tankers. One of these has recently been delivered to Aberdeenbased Taylor's Industrial Services.

The stainless-steel trailer unit was built to Taylor's precise requirements for deep-lift applications, with a high-capacity 5500-gallon tank and a 2,000cfm Hick Hargreaves 11850 vacuum pump.

A vital factor is its ability to meet the latest ADR regulations for flammable hazardous wastes, including ADR Class 3.6.1 and S.
