Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CM's conversation with Alex Stanmore proves to be a fascinating take on a practical interpretation of the words 'performance guarantee'. In response to government requests to look into the environmental impact of aggregate delivery, the transport group of the Quarry Products Association (QPA) together with TRL came up with a number of recommendations. The biggest conclusion," explains Stanmore, "was that in terms of reducing carbon emissions, congestion and other related issues, if we could stimulate the growth of articulated vehicles on aggregate deliveries there'd be a number of gains. Put simply, two artic loads equal three eight-wheelers."

And Stanmore reports that the volume of aggregates moved by Brett Group artics has risen by 70% since 2000. But not all sites have been keen to embrace them, as Stanrnore acknowledges.

fp "We've looked at this issue to see what could be done to

improve customer acceptability of artics. The first thing was to identify the types of trailers that are susceptible to overturning. These are mainly high-sided vehicles which carry all loads, ie general-purpose tippers. But purpose-built low-sided trailers have a very good safety record probably comparable with eight-wheelers and we've promoted their use.

The other thing was to recommend on the QPA website that all members and major companies fit inclinometers to their artic tippers as standard." The move, says Stanmore, has been widely accepted.

Like many operators, Stanmore is also an advocate of auto chassis lube (ACL) systems, being a major customer of Groeneveld. "We use it on companyowned and owner-driver vehicles, mainly on eight-leggers. With ACL we Know a truck's not going to be waiting up six weeks for greasing, it's being done continually. On balance it offers real financial advantages across the whole vehicle life."
