Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Geoff Dossetter (below), director of external affairs at the Freight Transport Association (FTA), says the Government would prefer to have only one freight trade association to deal with, but conflicts of interest mean a merger between the Road Haulage Association (RI-IA) and the FTA is forever unlikely.

However, some mergers within other bodies may be inevitable. Roger Williams, chief executive officer of the UK Warehouse Association (UKWA), comments: "The broad logistics and transport sector is arguably overcrowded with trade associations, many of whom serve overlapping parts of the industry. A number of people believe there is considerable scope for consolidation, and this seems inevitable as companies begin to question why they should send off an annual subscription cheque to three or four different trade bodies, each of which provides remarkably similar services."

That said, there are pockets of collaboration. For instance, ALLMI works closely with the FTA, and it is possible that at some point the FTA could absorb other sectoral players. •
