IT DISTURBS me that my industry is going through such harrowing times, and there doesn't seem to be as much as a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.
But I've devised a solution.
As an industry, we seem to be weak, self-centred, politically naive, and easily trodden upon, while I also believe that the trade associations have not led as they should have.
I note, whilereading Commercial Motor, that Roger King is going to be departing the Road Haulage Assoication in 2009.
Here's an ideal opportunity for the RHA to invite a real leader to take over Mr King's mantle.
The person I am nominating is considered a giant in the political sphere; he's a well-known and notable face in Westminster, and various Government departments are likely to start quaking with fear up and down the corridors of Whitehall. Without any doubt, in a short space of time, our industry would be on a rapid road to recovery.
Step forward Ken Livingstone. I've been a member of the RHA in the past, and I would happily rejoin if it had the gumption, not to ask, not to invite, but to go on beaded knee and beg Ken to take on the position of chief executive.
Not everybody's choice I'm sure, but the fireworks would be well worth it.
