Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Seven years ago, a marriage break-up left Lyn Flegg with a transport company in crisis. Since then she has changed the company name to Flegg Transport, paid off all the debts and modernised the fleet.

Based at Ashton Clinton, near Aylesbury, the company specialises in plant and machinery haulage with an all Daf fleet that includes a new XF95, believed to be the first RHO Daf XF az in the country to be equipped with an automatic gearbox. It normally works coupled to a specialist Broshuis semi-trailer with a Fassi too TM crane.

"We run six trucks, all with cranes." operations manager Mark Marshall and 011ie Witton, operations director, tell us. "At the lighter end we have a 7.5-tonne Daf LF which we operate with a drawbar trailer. It has overrun brakes so the rig is rated at just 11.0 tonnes. The TM crane takes something away from the payload but we still get 1.7 tonnes on the flatbed and 1.5 tonnes on the trailer. We can demount the crane, which gives us a bit more flexibility, so that's usually enough but sometimes we could do with 13 or even 18 tonnes GTW.

"The reason we operate Dafs is the service we get from the truck sales guy, Tony Retford, at Luton Daf. We are only a small company but we get well looked after and that goes all the way through to Daf at Tha_me. Having the one marque helps with the company identity but in some ways our trucks tend to be a little out of the ordinary.

"The 7.5-tanner has a single bunk sleeper cab and six-cylinder 22,ohp engine. It took us a little while to get the spec together so we expect to keep it for four to five years. That way we can keep up with any changes in technology without sacrificing reliability. We are buying it on HP over three years.

"Six months into its operation with us, the computer started throwing out spurious faults and at one time instructed the driver to shut the engine down altogether. On that occasion we called Daf Aid, who were on the scene within an hour. The truck went into the dealer who was able to reprogramme it. "The full air disc brakes are heavy and need a bit more effort from the driver than we expected. But they do the work and are compatible with the older drum brakes on our trailer. With the crane, it is equivalent to running the truck half-laden all the time so 16.o-37.ompg overall is not too bad.

"The last 7.5-tanner we had was rated at f8ohp so the driver is quite happy with the new zzohp engine driving through a sixspeed box. He can be away from base for three to four days at a time but says he loves the little sleeper cab. It has plenty of storage space and gives a good ride. to
