Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

L'OR the first time this year a slight setback has to be recorded in the number of new commercial vehicles registered, for although the goodsvehicle figure at 5,863 for April, 1936, is slightly above last year's comparable return of 5.,620, the percentage increase is much lower, whilst the hackneyvehicle registrations at 712 contrast with 803 for April, 1935, thus showing a drop of 91. The total number of new motor vehicles registered in April last was 43,207, compared with 33,699 in the corresponding month of last year.

More Petrol Goods Vehicles.

In the class for petrol goods vehicles, 5,629 machines were registered, as against 5,369 a year earlier. The chief increase was recorded in the section for 2-2i-tanners, with a rise from 1,436 to 1,729, but _other less-important in creases were shown in the division for vehicles not exceeding 12 cwt. (1,016 to 1,165) • and 12-cwt.-1-ton (981 to 991). Falls were recorded in the following classes :-1-11 tonners

tered. •

It is somewhat surprising to note that the registration of goods oilers continues on the downward grade, and the figure of 101 for April, 1986, is 25 biONIF that for. April, 1935. The chief registrations of this type of vehicle. took place in the categories covered by un15428

laden weights from -three tons to seven tons.

Included in the goods-vehicle returns were 28 vehicles licensed for drawing trailers, this figure being the same as for last year.

Although there was a falling off in the number of electric vehicles registered, as compared with the past few months, the April figure was above the comparable return for 1935, the number being 46, contrasted with 40 a year ago, all but four of them being licensed in the two classes below 1-tonners.

The steam vehicle drew a blank in the returns for April last.

The total numberof six-wheelers registered was 149, compared with 132 in April, 1935. Of the former, 71. were of the rigid type and. 48 of the articulated pattern and, of the latter, 87 were rigid six-wheelers and 45_ of the articulated class. In the division for eightwheelers, 19 vehicles were licensed, against -15 in April, 1935.

All the vehicles registeredin the sections for agricultural vans and lorries took place in the petrol-engined the total of 90 having to be set against 76 for the previous year. •

". Turning to hackney vehicles, we find that, although the inortber of oilers

licensed was well maintained, there was a decided diminution in the petrolvehicle figures. Of the 232 oil-engined hackneys registered, 102 were 32-40seaters, the next class in order of strength being the 42-56-seater with' 71 registrations, Last year's total for oilers was 223, when the most popular

type was the 40-48-seater (74) , • Of a total of 448 petrol-engined hackneys, nearly half (210) occurred in the category for vehicles not exceeding four persons. Most of the remaining vehicles (116) were licensed in the 26-32-seater section, the only other divisions of note being the 14-20-seaters (28), 28-28seaters (39) and 32-40-seaters (35). Bearing in • mind the drop from last year's total of 578, the fails in the various classes are, more or less., sympathetic, the most notable exception being the 48-56-seaters.

Big Increase in Troilieybusei.

Included in the hackney-vehicle total are 32 ta-olleybuses, compared with seven a year ago and, although no sixwheelers were registered in April last year, it is noteworthy that 36 passenger vehicles of this type Were licensed in April, 1936, The aggregate returns for the four months ended April show .a total registration of 168,658. new vehicles, contrasted with 'last year's .figure of 151,251. The number of goods•vehOes was .28,542 and hackneY.vehicles last year's Corresponding 'totals, ,being

24,900 and '2,241 'respectively.
