Capable of Being Towed or Man-hauled, the Appliance will Deliver 10,000 Gallons of Water ner Hour.
THE PORTABLE fire pump capable of being easily hauled by one or two men, or of being trailed behind a motor vehicle, has definitely taken its place in fire-fighting, because it meets the circumstances where, in many cases, the fall-capacity motor pump could not be brought to work, or where it would not be justifiable to maintain a staff for the purpose of manning the large appliance. In many works, private mansions and detached buildings, the portable fire pump answers all the purpose,
at any rate, for first-aid work.
One of the latest to produce such an
appliance is Laity (England) td., 20-2§, Lonsdale Road, Kilburn, Co.,London, N.W. 6. Mounted on two wheels on an extremely strong chassis, the side and cross-members of which are in pressed steel joined by angle plates and riveted, it has a movable towing bar which can be disposed horizontally for towing purposes, or vertically (as is shown in our illustration) as a front support. The pump is driven by a four-cylinder monobloc engine of 65 mm. bore and 100 ram. stroke, speed being reduced by spur gears vmeunted on ball bearings enclosed in a case coupled to,the engine by Oldham joints.
The pump is of the rotary description, producing a large volume without any valve, and permitting great rapidity of priming under all conditions. The pressure at the nozzle is 13 lb., and the guaranteed output 7,700 gallons of water per hour, but when the appliance is fully extended it, can easily attain an output ' of 10,000 gallons per hour. The intake and output pipes are placed one on each side of the chassis, the inlet pipe .being connected with short lengths of 80-mm. rubber pipe embodying snap couplings, as used by the Paris Fire Brigade. At the end of the inlet pipe is a filter. The outlet is divided into two, each having a half union of the Guillemin type for pipes of 40 mm. and 45 mm. respectively, the outlet having a butterfly valve. As the pump has no valve it can produce a direct supply of water without any intermediate sump, a special inlet pipe being supplied for the purpose at a small extra cost.
The chassis is mounted on the axle by leaf springs, and the wheels can be shod, either with pneumatic or solid tyres. Supports and attachments for the hose are provided, and the appliance is turned out complete with all instructions, accessories, and the necessary spares. The overall dimensions are :—Length, 6 ft. 7 ins.; width, 4 ft. 5 ins.; height, 4 ft. 5 ins.
