THE GOVERNMENT is to give local councils more powers to co-ordinate roadworks in an effort to minimise disruption to the road network.
From early next year, local authorities will be able to prevent work happening in the rush hour and insist that utility companies work together to co-ordinate their repairs.
Transport Minister Rosie Winterton says: "Companies such as gas or water suppliers need to carry out repairs and improvements hut it should be possible to co-ordinate their work better, and do it when the road isn't so busy."
The new rules have been introduced under the Traffic Management Act 2004 and will apply only in England. The Welsh Assembly is planning similar regulations.
