Funding for the scheme is understood to have come—somewhat reluctantly—from a one-off £257m payment from Bernie Ecclestone, the Formula One promoter. The sum was a settlement demanded by the EU's competition department, which had ruled that Eeelestone's purchasing
of 100 years' broadcasting rights from the Fit was anti-competitive.
Garth Clark, chief executive of TOL, says: "So many people are killed or seriously injured in Europe, and environmental issues are rising up the political agenda. It really does have the potential to accelerate research in these areas and help deliver results earlier"
