• The London Borough of Enfield, backed by the Freight Transport Association, is set to ban CVs above 7.5 tonnes unless they have business in the area.
The decision, made last Friday, has run into opposition from the London Boroughs Transport Committee, which operates the London lorry ban: "It's not clear that a 7.5-tonne ban would be as effective as a 16.5-tonne ban," says a spokesman, adding that Conservative-controlled Enfield should operate both schemes in tandem.
The LBTC ban on night-time and weekend driving of trucks over 16.5 tonnes allows exceptions based on a permit system; Enfield's scheme relies on drivers obeying the law.
"But we know from experience most drivers flout the law," says the LIM spokesman.
