Lack of cash means investigation into some types of wheel fittings will not be carried out, says Don Wright, chairman of the committee preparing the new British Standard for tyres and wheels.
The Commercial Motor Wheel Loss fund, supported by readers throughout the transport industry, will make a significant contribution to the research programme. Wright says £12,000 has been promised, subject to confirmation, but even for a reduced programrne of research, at least £20,000 is needed.
Wright had hoped to find £35,000, but after two years of fund raising the BSI committee has decided it cannot delay the introduction of a new, more stringent British Standard any longer.
