• The Government is pressing ahead with its request for early agreement in the European Community for the mandatory fitting of seat belts in all new coaches.
It wants operators to provide "easy-to-use retractable seat belts on all seats", adding that belts are offered for sale by manufacturers, but most operators do not buy them.
Officials have been discus sing with the Bus and Coach Council how to equip existing vehicles with seat belts. This follows the deaths of 12 British tourists in last month's coach crash in France.
No reason for the Impact Holidays crash in Macon, France, has been found. The vehicle was reported to be travelling at its normal speed and no defects were found on the coach.
