• A London police inspector has warned that lorry drivers driving in the capital should look out for police enforcement.
Inspector Colin Clark, from the south-east Traffic Unit, made his statement after the third major traffic check in south-east London in three months.
It took place south of the Blackwall Tunnel last Wednesday morning (July 9), while the other two went ahead in May and June on the A2 at Falconwood, Kent.
At the first two swoops around 46% of the commercial vehicles stopped had defects, although no figures are available for the smaller Blackwall Tunnel operation.
"We're hoping that drivers don't think that it's easy in London," Clark said.
He added that the southeast Traffic Unit is committed to having one big traffic check, in conjunction with the Department of Transport, Customs and Excise, and other enforcement authorities, once every five to six weeks.
"The lorry driving fraternity doesn't have a particularly bad reputation. Normally the larger the fleet the better: but sonic of the smaller and one-man operations need to bring themselves up to scratch," Clark said.
