HE FORD Motor Company pushed up its commercial vehicle ;ales to a record level in the first six months of 1980 despite he problems in the new vehicle market.

Ford sold 51,203 units in the irst half of this year, 2.6 per :ent more than the previous )est achieved in 1973. These lew figures represent a record market share of 34.5 per cent.

The company sold 5380 more commercial vehicles in the 'irst half of 1980 than in the same period of 1979 — an increase of 11.7 per cent, whereas industrial sales as a whole fell by 5.5 per cent.

Heavy lorry sales (over 3.5 tons gvw) advanced 21.7 per cent from 71 59 to 871 2 units and transit medium van sales improved 20.2 per cent from 21,371 units to 25,682.

Ford's lorry sales director Andy Thorns said "despite these tremendous first half year results we must expect to meet more difficult market conditions in the second half of the yea r.' ' Total sales of Ford's com mercial vehicles in Europe during the first six months of this year also set an all time record. Between January and June 103,600 vehicles were sold, capturing 14.4 per cent of the total European commercial vehicle market.

Still in Europe, the company has maintained its overall market leadership which it established in the first quarter of the year.
