AArticle 22 of the Motor Vehicles (Authorisation of Special Types) General Order 1973 authorizes the use of roads of motor vehicles and trailers carrying loads where the overall width of the vehicle on which the load is carried together with the width of any lateral projection of the load exceeds 4.3 metres (14ft I in) but does not exceed 6.1 metres (20 ft). This is subject to certain other restrictions and provisions contained in the Order. These are that the speed of the vehicle does not exceed 20 mph (Article 23(3), that an attendant is employed (Article 24), that the approval of the Department of the Environment has been obtained (Article 26), that the police have been notified (Article 27) and that the vehicle complies in all other respects with the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1973.
