A CCORDING to Labour's argu
ment, reducing the number of C-licence vehicles would relieve congestion on the roads and so help both the railways and British Road Services. Present plans include a big build-up for the nationalized section of the road transport industry.
It appears that full-blooded renationalization of long-distance road haulage has lost some of its attraction for Labour leaders—despite all the resolutions passed at conferences. Instead they are toying with the idea of "competitive public ownership "—B. R.S. v the Rest. This could include the selective take-over of individual firms and restrictions as to distance and types of goods for others.'
But But there is unlikely to be any more definite conclusion until the results of the Ministry of Transport inquiry into the carriers' licensing system are known.
