Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

By Chris Tindall HAULIERS ARE being urged to watch out for signs of mental health disorders among their drivers because the nature of their job can be a catalyst for depression, according to experts.

It follows research by The Fuelcard Company showing that anywhere between 30% and 40% of HGV drivers could be suffering from the condition to some degree. And with the so-called most miserable day of the year – ‘Blue Monday’, or 23 January, – almost upon us, bosses are asked to remember the stress placed on their staff in the current economic climate too.

“The lifestyle of a long-distance driver involves being away from family for prolonged periods and spending many hours alone in their cab, making them more prone to suffering from depression,” says Jakes de Kock, sales and marketing director at The Fuelcard Company.

Ed Miles, MD at Norwich-based FreightForce Distribution, and who is also involved in an NHS project to develop a Mental Health & Wellbeing at Work strategy, says one in four people will experience mental health issues at work.

He adds that the difference for HGV drivers is that “the work means countless hours spent alone, which means they do not experience very much personal contact, interaction and stimulation” .

“If commercial drivers have concerns or issues, or unresolved matters at home or from the work place, then they will often mull these over and over – and small issues can become pressure points for some drivers. However, the majority are well organised and adapt well to a mobile lifestyle, but it is a career that does not suit everyone. Drivers must consider their physical and mental wellbeing,” he adds.

● An investigation looking at depression and driving will be published next month.
