• A haulage firm had its Operators Licence cut by three months and was given a final warning against persistent speeding at a public inquiry.
Bingley-based Jonas Crowther & Sons appeared in front of North East Traffic Commissioner Keith Waterworth after an examination of the firm's tachographs by the Vehicle Inspectorate showed 17 speeding offences on 10 trips.
Traffic examiner Gery Doherty said that on one occasion a vehicle driven by Graham Crowther was shown to have been driven at speeds up to 115kmih (70mph). The inquiry heard that the company, which runs six vehicles, had already received a warning on speeding in May 1994.
In his defence Crowther said the tachogiaph might have been faulty and in the future speed limiters would be fitted to the company trucks. His driving licence was not endorsed.
Jonas Crowther's Operators Licence will now expire in May 1998 instead of August.
