CONTINUED increases in European hauliers' efficiency are likely to limit Daf Trucks' ability to take advantage of economic recovery.

That is one of the company's conclusions which accompanied last week's announcement that it had turned a 27m Guilder loss in 1983 into an 8m Guilder (Um) profit last year.

It increased sales from 13,645 to 14,238 vehicles, while its Netherlands home market for vehicles over 9 tonnes gvw grew by 22 per cent. In the United Kingdom Daf sales grew by 12 per cent, and in France by six per cent.

Against that, sales fell by 10 per cent in West Germany, by nine per cent in Italy, and by five per cent in Spain. Overall, Daf boosted its share of the European market over 9 tonnes from 6.3 per cent to 6.8 per cent. The market grew by 1.7 per cent.
