BEDFORD Commercial Vehicles is closing its 16-year old die making plant in Bedford as part of a review of its manufacturing activities.
Closure of the die making plant, which has ceased to be cost effective and has failed to attract sufficient outside business to justify its retention, will mean the end of 249 jobs there and another 61 associated jobs at Luton.
A further 177 jobs are to go at the company's Luton and Dunstable plants following a review of manufacturing operations.
Bedford is aiming to achieve most of the job losses through voluntary redundancy, early retirement, and job transfers, but compulsory redundancy has not been ruled out.
