At least two MPs will now be able to take an informed part in debates on transport. They are Stephen Ross (Isle of Wight) and Trevor Skeet (Bedford), who have spent 28 days with the National Freight Corporation as Fellows of the Industry and Parliamentary Trust.
Both have been getting their hands dirty. This makes a marked change from the genteel but less productive Parliamentary pastime of howling down the other side.
Stephen Ross, for instance, has worked on the island and at the Southampton branch of Western British Road Services, loading vehicles, driving a fork-lift truck, going out on delivery rounds, accompanying a vehicle for its annual test and learning to handle an artic. He has also done traffic-office work and called on customers.
Trevor Skeet has been serving his time with Roadline in the Midlands.
