A FIERCE row is in the offing between the Department of Transport and the SMMT, backed by some British and Continental vehicle manufacturers.
A dispute has arisen over the results of comparative vehicle tests carried out by the DTp using 17 vehicle combinations. The tests, on smoke, noise, manoeuvrability and braking, are aimed at providing Mr Rodgers with the figures he will need to resolve the question of the heavier lorry.
It is the braking tests and the form in which the results have been presented that is giving most concern. The vehicles were not specially prepared and in some cases were drawn directly from services without the knowledge of the manufacturers.
The report, which is not particularly favourable to the case of the heavier lorry, is expected to become available before the end of January.
