THE SURFACE Transport Committee of the Merseyside Chamber of Commerce and Industry will be represented at a public inquiry into plans to increase user tolls on the Mersey road tunnel complex. The inquiry will start in Liverpool on January 23.

The Merseyside County Council proposes new tolls of 70p (from 60p) for H.G.V.'s and 30p (25p) for lorries up to three tons and cars, per crossing.

The committee will support the county council's call for the 09,934,901 capital debt of the tunnel system to be paid off by the Government on the grounds that the tunnels form part of the national trunk road network.

Bypassing

PLANS for the Scarisbrick bypass, to take the A570 Southport-Ormskirk trunk road past Carr Cross, Scansbrick and Pinfold, has been included in the Trunk Road Preparation Pool of the Department of Transport.

A cost-benefit analysis of the scheme, a study of road accident records for this stretch of the A570 will now be carried out. The scheme may be placed in a priority programme to proceed as cash is made available.
