I WAS PLEASED to learn that the Ratcliff tailboard loader (CM, last week) is to be produced in Canada. This represents a welcome reversal of the all-too-familiar trend of British manufacture of foreign-designed mechanical handling equipment.
John Ratcliff, of E. J. Ratcliff (Mechanical Engineers) Ltd., tells me that the Teamsters Union—the giant lorryrnen's organization—has a one-third stake in the new plant opening shortly in Vancouver. Many equipment manufacturers would give a lot to have such a powerful body rooting for their products. Perhaps the Transport and General Workers' Union will be inspired to follow suit?
