EVERY YEAR, BMC uses over 1,000 tons of paper in producing sales and service literature—equivalent in weight to 250 fully grown African elephants, I'm told by the Corporation. Just what elephants have to do with service manuals I'm not sure, but I learn that the number of catalogues, folders, price lists and colour cards used by BMC in one year for cars, vans, trucks and tractors and gas turbines amounts to no fewer than 10m.
Driver's handbooks are produced in 14 languages and workshop manuals in 10. The corporation's technical publications department at Oxford has even produced handbooks in Chinese to accompany an order for four-wheel-drive Austin Gipsys.
