Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

heavies smaller grants for others THIS YEAR the Road Transport Industry Training Board will pay cash 1 grants to companies registered with it who enter drivers for the Lorry Driver of the Year Competition, sponsored by COMMERCIAL MOTOR. Entrants will be able to claim a three-day off-the-job allowance for drivers and vehicles for an eliminating round and a one-day allowance for each competitor reaching the final.

The three-day grant for drivers will be £9. Vehicles are graded by g.v.w.—at £12 for over 20 tons; £9, 10-19 tons; £6, 5-9 tons; and £3, less than 5 tons.

Mr. Peter Haxby, RTITB director of training, said this week: "Many people seem to forget that driving a heavy vehicle is a very skilled occupation. We classify the competition as 'advanced driver training' as it encourages development of the necessary driving skills to a very high standard."

This news is expected to increase the entries at the existing centres and the national secretary is endeavouring to establish additional centres in the West Country, Wales, Scotland and Northern England. The regulations sub-committee of LDOY met this week to discuss the RTITB grant and in the interest of efficiency it has recommended to area secretaries that entries should not exceed 150 for each centre.

A list of competition dates and secretaries has already appeared (CM, January 5). Further details of eliminating rounds can be obtained from: National secretary, COMMERCIAL MOTOR, 40 Bowling Green Lane, London, Ed.

It is hoped that the training boards covering C -licence operators will follow the RTITB lead.

First training grants paid ON Tuesday, six days after the first training grant claims were officially received and less than two months after the first levies were paid, RTITB chairman Mr. Kenneth Turner signed the first cheques in payment of training grants. Claini forms were sent out to all companies who had paid their levy with the request that they should be completed and returned as soon as possible after January 1, The RTITB says that companies which complied promptly will, within the next few days, be receiving cheques which will contribute to the cost of training which they carried out during the period of August 1 to December 31, 1967.
