Good Performance by a Leyland Fire-engine.

The Leyland Cub FK1 400 g.p.M. fire-engine, which was commissioned a few months ago by Birkenhead Fire Brigade, recently put up an excellent performance at a dock fire. Continuous pumping lasted for a period of 50 hours, during which time a pressure of 100 lb. per sq. in. was maintained at the pump, with two deliveries, each hose being 200 yards long. The nozzles were f-in, and fin. respectively, these being replaced later by a twin branch with a nozzle of 1 in. diameter, this being used for the last 12 hours' purqping. The lift from the dock was about 23 ft.

Middlesex Agreement on Charges for Accident Cases.

Middlesex County Council has made arrangements with certain insurance companies for payments by the companies. at an agreed rate, in respect of cases admitted to the county hospitals in consequence of road accidents, in respect of which a payment is made by the insurers under Section 36 of the Road Traffic Act, 1930.

The agreed rate is below the actual cost of maintenance in respect of some of the hospitals, but in the case of one is more than the cost. Where the person admitted has a fixed place of abode in Hertfordshire, Section 80 of the Poor Law Act, 1930, provides that the cost of such relief shall be reimbursed by Hertford County Council. Middlesex Council has agreed that where any amount is recovered from the insurers in such a case, and such amount is less than the actual cost of maintenance, it will not claim from the Hertford Council, under Section 80 of the Poor Law Act, more than the amount recovered from the insurers. The proviso is made that where the amount received from the insurers is more than the actual cost of maintenance, the sum received shall be tha basis of liability under that Act.

The effect of this ruling will be that where the insurers pay an amount less than the cost of maintenance, there will be no charge against Hertfordshire in respect of the balance. Where, however, the insurers pay a figure greater than the cost, this sum will be payable to Middlesex as if it were the charge under Section 80.
