introduces articulated
SIX-WHEELERS
A, announced on page 772 of our 'i.sue dated January 12th, Garner Motors, Ltd., Tyseley, Birmingham, is now offering several of its chassis in short-wheelbase form for use in conjunction with semi-trailers, thus forming articulated six-wheelers capable of carrying large pay-loads.
In particular, there are four normalcontrol .short-wheelbase vehicles specially engine. This last-named chassis is the normal-control edition of the wellknown J06.
As a four-wheeler, model ABM carries 2 tons, as does the ASO-type. For tractor work, the wheelbase of both these chassis is 10 ft. The pay-load of the AJ model, as a four-wheeler, is 3 tons and its wheelbase, in the recommended form, is 10 ft. or 10 ft. 6 ins., whilst the AJ-6, as a normal vehicle, can carry 3i tons to 4 tans of pay-load, and its wheelbase, for semi-trailer purposes, is 10 ft. 6 ins.
The only deviations from standard practice which are required include the following: The provision of suitable tyre equipment for the additional load ; it is schemed to provide one spare wheel common to both trailer and tractor. A trailer-brake lever of the Neate, or other type, is provided, and the chassis is equipped with suitable mountings to carry the turn-table
supporting brackets. The final-drive ratio is lower than in the case of a
four-wheeled model, whilst an additional petrol tank can be provided if required.
On the previous page we show an AJ6 chassis of 10 ft wheelbase supplied with a semi-trailer. In this case the trailer wheelbase is 14 ft. 9 ins., and the overall length of the vehicle 81 ft. S ins. When laden the tractor frame has a height of 2 ft. 4 ins., whilst the unladen height of the floor of the trailer is 1 ft. 6i ins.—the body being of the well type and having dimensions of 21 ft. Gi ins, length by 6 ft. 8 ins. inside width, whilst the body offers a capacity of 1,040 cubic ft.
In its complete form the unladen vehicle scales 4 tons 144 cwt., whilst the respective axle weights, when unladen, are 1 ton 3 cwt. (front), 2 tons (driving axle) and 1 ton 114 cwt. (trailer axle).
In the instance quoted, the pay-load is 7 tons, and all wheels are shod with 32-in. by 6-in. India tyres. The purchaser of this vehicle was largely influenced by the satisfactory service obtained from a 4J0 model of Garner make.
The simple and robust construction of the Garner chassis" makes it well able to withstand the rigorous use which is the lot of an articulated sixwheeler.
A feature that can be included on Garner vehicles is a removable backrest in the cab, which, when carried by special brackets, provides a sleeping bunk, so that it can afford accommodation for one man, whilst another uses the driving seat as a berth. This point is of interest as so many articulated six-wheelers are used for longdistance service and the Road Traffic Act requirements as to drivers' hours call for some such provision.
