Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

MUMEROUS attractive features characterize a needevice 1 •1 for attachment to the driving 'wheels of vehicles to afford positive traction on surfaces giving insufficient adhesion-for an ordinary pneumatic tyreto drive. It is named the Bower wheel attachment and is made by Messrs. 13elton Bros. and Drury, Eastoft, Scunthorpe.

. As can be noted from the accompanying illustration, the attachment incorporates a set of spuds, similar in effect to the devices commonly employed or the .same purpose on agricultural tractors. In this case there is a number of tough-steel spuds which project, when in the effective position, about half-way across the tread of the tyre. Each is integral with an arm or shank of circular cross-section and lit ins. in diameter, that is held by a set-screw in a clamp in a cast-iron ring. The last-named is, a sturdy unit secured to the wheels, in the majority of cases, by hooks, so that it is readily detachable. , Where hooks cannot be used, drilling may be necessary, but this is unusual.

According to local conditions, the spuds can be extended to a greater or less degree, whilst they can also be retracted clear of the ground or removed altogether. It is of note that in the retracted position the spuds are turned so that their 'spade ends are parallel with the walls of the tyres and the overall width of the lotry is increased but little. Virtually. unchekable,.the Bower attachment is available for practically all makes of lorry and the Model for Bedford, Fordsori, and similarly wheeled vehicles costs £19 19s, •
