Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ACURIOUS type of vehicle which as been evolved solely forutility purposes, and which may be designated chara-tipper,. has been built by W. and G. Du Oros, Ltd,, of Acton Vale, London, W. This machine, which we illustrate in its guises as a passenger vehicle and as a tipping wagon for such materials as coal and coke, has been constructed with a view to meeting the requirements of colliery owners who demand a vehicle for the transport of miners and, when not used in tins capacity, for carrying and tipping coal and other materials which have to be dealt with in connection with colliery work.

The body, which is of the end-tipping type, is steel-lined, and, along its sides run angle irons, which carry the ends. of cross-seats or benches, the centres of which are supported by steel posts fitted into holes in the steel Boor. As a passenger vehicle, the seating capacity is for 25 persons, whilst as a lorry it will Carry 21 tons.

The tipping gear is of the single telescopic-screw type, hand-operated, and fitted between the permanent, cab and the body. To facilitate entry and egress, a board at, the front. of the tipping body is hinged at the bottom and drops down, forming a gangway between the cab and the body proper.

In order to afford weather protection while passenger carrying, a satisfactory form of hood is employed. This has a back curtain provided with two celluloid lights, and this hood, when not required, is released from the brackets by which it, is supported on the body, and is then pushed forward, the hoop sticks being locked together. against the back of the cab, thus leaving the body free for tipping purposes.

The cab portion is well protected by high side doors and sides provided with oval windows, and a large glass window is also provided in the back.

The W. and G. agents for whom this vehicle is being hi-lilt are Jeffrey and Co.' Ltd. Some years ago the dual-purpose vehicle for passengers and goods had

achieved a fair measure of popularity, but it, gradually fell into disuse, partly because it proved difficult to make the vehicle in its passenger guise sufficiently attractive to compete with the Wholetime coach and partly because a good finish could not be maintained on a vehicle used for rough haulage work.

It is possible that the successful employment of the W. and G. vehicle may again turn the attention of designers to the possibility of producing a combination body for other purposes than that for which this was built.
