Spring Suspension.

The various kinds of springs produced by William E. Cary, Ltd., Manchester, are widely used throughout the industry. The practical experience and thorough knowledge of the working conditions of suspension for all classes of business vehicles which this maker possesses enable the concern to be in a valuable position to meet the requirements of every class of user. Gary's manufacture every conceivable type of iamm ated spring, constructed of steel of uniform temper throughout, and of sizes suitable for the parcelear or the machine of heavy axle-weight. The Cary patented open-plate type of spring suspension is a

speciality. This invention has certain of its leaves curved to different radii from the adjacent leaves ; this enables the load to be taken up gradually, and also road shocks to be more fully absorbed. Our illustrations show a Cary special spring designed for steam-wagon use, and also the ordinary closed-plate type for public-service vehicles.

Quarter, semi-elliptic and three-quarter elliptic springs are also a product. of this well-known North of England maker.

Boiler Enamel.

It is very essential for steam-wagon owners and users to take the necessary precaution of keeping the boilers of their vehicles free from scale and corrosion.

Houseman and Thompson, Ltd., Exchange 'Buildings, Newcastle-on-Tyne, the maker of P.M. boiler enamel, claims that its particular composition is a preventive against the damaging effects of indifferent feed-water.

" D.M." is made entirely from tropical plants, and during the process of manufacture no cheinica,1 or iiitirious matter is added, therefore eliminating the disastrous results that many preparations have upon the boiler and its fittings. The concern informs us

that." P.M." is mechanical in its action, as it forms a coating around the particles of scale-producing matter, thus rendering it impossible for the particles to adhere and form scale, so that they fall to the bottom of the boiler and may be easily removed when cleaning out.

It often happens that oil and grease pass with the feed water into the boiler, and in such eases it is claimed that "D..11." neutralizes the serious effects of this, due to possible overheating. There is also an undoubted saving in the fuel and repair account. In addition to being applied to steam-wagon boilers, the product can be used with good effect in the cooling water of gas and oil engines.

The Sherrin-Diamant Tire.

Tires still present a fairly large percentage of the troubles experienced by users ot commercial vehicles ; this of course particularly applies to the cases where pneumatics are in use, i.e., on light express delivery vans, but to a certain extent it also applies where solid rubber tires are adopted, as these sometimes cause trouble owing to the extra vibration imparted to the mechanism and goods carried. We recently took an opportunity of examining and testing a promising new tire, which is said to combine the wear-resisting qualities of the solid with the resiliency of the pneumatic. This tire is manufactured by the Sherrin-Diamant Tyre Syndicate, Ltd., 10 and 12, Clopthall Avenue, and, though the concern has only recently bee.' formed, it has already received a considerable number of trial orders. Some of the tires have already completed several thousand miles, and they show very slight signs of wear, whilst the difference in use between them and pneumatics is hardly noticeable.

As will be seen from our diagrammatic illustration, the construction of the new tire is somewhat novel. The inventors have realized that the failure of a. cushion tire sometimes occurs owing to cracking of the sides, due to the localization there of the compression strains, and they have circumvented this by.binding the walls together with rawhide thong, in a similar manner to the lacing of a boot. A minimum mileage of 10,000 is guaranteed.
