M6 TOLL operator Midland Expressway said there has been about 4,000 more goods vehicle journeys per week since June this year. However, the Freight Transport Association (FTA) said the road is still being under used.
On average, nearly 45,000 vehicles, including cars, used the Cannock to Coleshill relief road every day between June and September, a 13% increase on the 2012 period. The FTA, however, said the 75,000-capacity road is not a realistic option for day-today use.
FTA head of road network management policy Malcolm Bingham said the road was intended to provide an option for hauliers to bypass the congested M6 in emergencies. "From when it was first opened, the toll operator set the level of charges too high for operators. It's only viable to use when urgent loads need to be moved," he said.
