• Transport law specialist Cohn Ward died on 13 December aged 52 after a long battle against multiple sclerosis.
To his clients he was constantly available with advice and help; to his enemies he was a determined foe. Ward was a man of strong opinions—particularly when he believed that his views were supported by the law.
He was not noted for his patience, nor for his tolerance with those he did not respect. Ward appeared at Public Inquiries all over the country, always with an unshakeable belief that his clients were entitled to a licence, and he was not averse to making his views known to the IC.
Outside of work he was an enthusiastic sailor as well as, among other things, an expert on poisonous snakes. And he never lost his enthusiasm for science.
Ward is survived by his widow. Gill, and children Sarah, Thomas, Lucy, Katherine and Oliver.
