Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• The Federation of Engine Remanufacturers (FER) and the Retail Motor Industry Federation ( RMI) have joined forces to launch the Concorde Remanufacturer engine scheme.

Customers buying FEB Concorde quality remanufactured engines which are fitted by an RMI member garage will get a written guarantee on the complete job.

This partnership will allow independent sector garages to offer a 12-month guarantee on the fitting and remanufacturing workmanship which rivals that of the franchised sector, says FER president 'David Gardener. The scheme is aimed primarily at the passenger car market but diesel engines are also included. Every engine remanufactured under the scheme will carry FER/RMI Concorde number. Details of the engine, the remanufacturer and who fitted it will be stored on computer by The FEB.

If a guaranteed engine gives problems the customer can call on any of the RMI's 12,000 members for assistance. Claims will be monitored by the FER and the Office of Fair Trading will supervise the returns.

So far there are 13 approved Concorde remaufacturers, but others are in the process of approval. The FER will police the standards of Concorde members' work Any slippage and they are off the scheme," says Gardener.

Once the Concorde scheme is running Gardener expects the FER to turn its attention to the dieselengined CV market. Warranty and turnaround times are seen as the major problem areas, he says. With good quality parts and workmanship he sees no problem with warranties.

Gardener expects some members of the scheme to keep reconditioned engines on the shelf as exchange stock.
