• Billy Daniels, the lorry driver sentenced to 13 years in jail in 1989 for smuggling cannabis from Spain, was due to take his appeal against conviction to the High Court in London on Wednesday (18 December).
Daniels was found guilty of knowingly bringing a tonne of cannabis into the country through Dover as part of a groupage load in his sealed tilt trailer.
But his conviction brought a sympathetic response from other international haulage drivers: a fund set up by driver David Raymer raised more than U,500.
