• Oil giant BP's 300 tanker drivers were expected to accept a 4% pay offer as CM went to press, The BP offer came with a recommendation from the Transport and General Workers' Union. In the last oil company deal, drivers at Esso agreed to personal contracts and gave up collective bargaining in return for wages of up to £33,000 a year (CM 14-20 Nov 1991),
Two Road Haulage Association regions met drivers' unions last week. The West Midlands has settled on 4.85% on basic wages; 80p on overnight subsistence and £20 towards LGV medi,cal expenses. This is the highest settlement in the current wage round, topping Scotland's 4.63%.
The RHA Eastern region has offered 3,7% plus 55p on overnight subsistence.
