lANSPORT Secretary David Howell was last week urged to seek )wers to limit the charges made for overnight parking on otorway service areas.
The plea came from Peter Mills (Tory, Devon West) who was orried about the increases in the charges in view of the statutory nitations on drivers' hours.
But Junior Transport Minister Kenneth Clarke, told him that the vel of any charges for parking was a matter for the commercial dgment of the operators of motorway service areas in the light of e amount of parking space available.
Parking was primarily intended for short periods of up to two )urs, for which no charge was made. He understood that some )erators were introducing higher charges for extended parking so at their ordinary customers were not inconvenienced by congesM in the car parks.
