A NEW £500 award and a gold medal is to be presented annually by Wincanton Transport Ltd to the author of a paper which makes a major contribution to the advancement of road transport and physical distribution in the EEC. This was announced by Sir James Barker chairman of Unigate Ltd, of which Wincanton is a subsidiary in London on Monday.

Sir James said that the entries, which will be accepted from all branches of road transport, will be judged by a committee composed of the Chartered Institute of Transport and Wincanton Transport. "I hope the award will stimulate thought and add something to the progress of road freight," he said.

He made the announcement at the golden jubilee lunch of Wincanton, which employs 850 people mainly in the West Country.

To celebrate the golden jubilee all employees participated in a prize draw for a BLMC Mini saloon, and the winner was Mr C. Norris, a trunk driver from the company's Wincanton depot. The function was attended by 200 people, including 80 employees, representatives of the vehicle manufacturing industry, the trade unions and MPs.
